Habitat: Brooklyn, NY
Markings: 2 bass players
(jeannine durfee, jessica weil Ð sisterhood of convoluted thinkers;)
2 drummers, fast, fast drums (rob christiansen Ð sisterhood, eggs,
grenadine and jackie wenger;) glockenspiel / keyboard (yuko nakagawa;)
3 girl singers
Lifecycle: hatched as a recording project
of Jeannine Durfee - member of Sisterhood of Convoluted Thinkers
(Teenbeat/Darla/555,) - Stick Insect grows and transforms into a live
band (exciting to watch!) Prior to the Sisterhood,
Durfee was known to the Washington DC/Teenbeat Records music scene for
appearances on records by Andrew Beaujon (Eggs) and Viva Satellite,
and Phil Krauth. You can also find her singing a duet with
Frank Boscoe on the song "Vacationland" from The Gazetteers
release, Territory Songs (Magic Marker Records, 2000).
Behavior: Stick Insect is recognized by its typically fast,
tight drum beats and large, layered bass sounds, balanced by infectious
glockenspiel and vocal melodies. The overall effect is hard-hitting and
direct, but coy. "By stripping her delivery of anything resembling
seductiveness (which would imply a scheming calculation, a knowingness
that thwarts innocence), Durfee is able to project a guileless yearning
that is easy to sympathize with, easy to assume as an expression of your
own hopes if you were so inclined." - Splendid E-zine
"...her fragile style makes the song's message of empowerment that much
stronger." All Music Guide

Recordings released a compilation of 55 bands earlier this year to celebrate
their 55th release. A true 'screamy-dance' good time is to be had by anyone
who picks this little trove up. The effort contains several 555 artists
such as Bit Shifter, Cannonball Jane, the Needles, Hunon (and several
others) submitting tracks 90 seconds or less! A fabulous treat since it
also contains many international artists that deserve much love. Bears
and Satellite a Japanese outfit stand out with a very fetching punkette
tune, Stick Insect is also featured on here and this is currently a solo
project of Jeannine from the Sisterhood of Convoluted Thinkers. Anyhoo...
like any sampler, this thing needs to be simply endorsed or rejected.
By all means take this review as a hearty endorsement and Fetch this as
soon as possible! www.poppolar.com has it available
for a pretty cheep price.
